Rep. Debbie Dingell on Trump Renaming Lake Ontario: “Absolutely Insane, And I Deeply Resent It”
Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) joined SiriusXM’s The Briefing with Steve Scully today and reacted in real time to President Trump’s announcement that he is renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America,” calling the move “absolutely insane” and saying she “deeply resent[s] it:”
STEVE SCULLY: So let me get your reaction in real time as I watch CNN, the chyron at 1:33 in the afternoon here on this Thursday: President Trump renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, effective immediately. Your reaction is what? REP. DEBBIE DINGELL: He just did that? SCULLY: He just did that. REP. DINGELL: I think it’s absolutely insane, and I deeply resent it. Our Great Lakes are a partnership that we have with Canada. And, by the way, that water is more than 20% of the fresh water in the world. That is a responsibility that both countries have. And let me ask you this: Do you think the fish in those waters have any idea? SCULLY: I was going to ask you that. REP. DINGELL: Do you think the birds that are flying in the air know if they’re in Canadian or Michigan air? I’m glad-I had not heard that. I did tweet about it two days ago and said, “Why don’t you name it Lake Natalie, and then we’ll know you’ll give it the attention it needs.” But it’s-I just-it’s insanity, and I don’t know what I can do to try to change that, but I’m gonna go immediately look at it.
