Sam Stein: The Public Is Very Unfamiliar With Trump’s Bill, But Those Who Do Know About It Really Don’t Like It

The Bulwark’s Sam Stein said on Friday’s “Morning Joe” that the more the public learns about the Big, Beautiful Bill, the more they dislike it.

SAM STEIN, BULWALK: As we’ve seen in the last couple presidencies, pass a big bill, and then it kind of goes to waste. And with Biden, that was a clear issue. They just tried really hard to sell the infrastructure investments, the green energy investments. They assumed that the stimulus that was included in the COVID relief would sell itself. None of that happened, right? With Obama, it was the healthcare reform. They went out there, and they couldn’t sell it. It was a disaster. With this bill specifically, what do you sell? You sell what? You sell the extension of tax cuts that people already feel. That’s not really going to work. Because it’s not new. It’s not new. You sell ICE, the investment in ICE enforcement, maybe because they are into that stuff anyway. But I’m not sure what the prevalence is for the American voter. So it becomes a little bit of a trick for Trump. And then there’s the question of what happens with people’s healthcare and their food benefits. Now, some of that’s backloaded and won’t happen until after the midterms. But some of it will happen in the fall, where you’ll see, because of the ACA subsidies, people’s health insurance premiums will go up. Can they maneuver around that? We’ve seen time and again that healthcare costs really do trip up parties in midterm elections. And so, for Trump, he does, yes. The public doesn’t quite know about it yet. There was a Priorities USA poll that showed that a lot of the public was unfamiliar with it. But those who do know about it really don’t like it. And I think that the field is tilted towards Democrats once they do hear about it.
