Hugh Hewitt: Trump Is Demonstrating Leadership, Restoring Order Where Disorder And Chaos Have Taken Over

FOX News contributor Hugh Hewitt on “Special Report” reacted to the outrage from the left in response to President Donald Trump’s use of the National Guard in Washington D.C.

BRET BAIER, HOST: Well, President Trump, in Anacostia, talking to law enforcement officers as well as National Guard troops. Um, this has some new data since this all started. August 7th has come out, 630 total arrests, 251 illegal aliens arrested, 3 known gang members arrested, 1 missing child recovered, 86 firearms seized, and no murders, uh, in this time. We’re gonna start there with our panel. Fox News contributor Hugh Hewitt, Olivia Beavers of the Wall Street Journal, and Matt Bennett, former Deputy Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs under Bill Clinton, co-founder of Third Way. Okay, Hugh, um, obviously the President sees this as a win politically, and he also sees it as a win for the nation’s capital. HUGH HEWITT: I think he’s right, Bret. Uh, he’s demonstrating leadership on what every governor and every mayor ought to be doing, which is restoring order where disorder and chaos has taken over. Americans do not like to feel unsafe. They do not like homeless people wandering around and appearing to threaten, even if they’re just mentally ill, themselves and their children and their families. When the President shows up and does a ride-along and shows up with the police and the National Guard, he is demonstrating to other mayors and other governors around the United States that their jurisdictions can be made safe if they invest their charisma and their political capital in making them safe. It’s a lesson, I think, is one of the reasons he is so very successful in his first six months is because he’s willing to lead and do very unusual things that presidents don’t normally do.
