RCP’s Wegmann: National Guardsmen Shooting Is Biden’s Fault, But Right Now It’s Trump’s Responsibility

RealClearPolitics White House correspondent Philip Wegmann argued Thursday on FOX News that while the National Guardsmen shooting in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday was former President Joe Biden’s fault, it is now President Donald Trump’s responsibility to properly vet immigrants from Afghanistan. “The national security situation has not changed materially from his first day in office,” Wegmann said. “And so the question is, why is the administration just now re-examining some of these Afghan nationals who are in the country? Why is the CIA, who reportedly worked with the attacker previously, why did they let the FBI take their eye off of the ball? So again, this is Donald Trump’s responsibility.”

AISHAH HASNIE, FOX NEWS: You know, there’s also so many questions, Phil, about the vetting process for these Afghan nationals. We’re learning just a few more details about this suspected shooter who is also in the hospital right now recovering from his injuries. And the questions surround, you know, did the Biden administration miss something when they brought these people in? How he got asylum earlier this year under the Trump administration? Did nothing raise flags about this man? PHILIP WEGMANN, REAL CLEAR POLITICS WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: This tragedy, this terrorist attack is a policy failure. He was not someone who snuck across the border. This isn’t a terrorist who came here with an army. Instead, our own government brought him into this country. He was granted asylum under the Trump administration. Obviously, it was President Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan that started all of this, but it’s Donald Trump’s responsibility right now. The national security situation has not changed materially from his first day in office. And so the question is, why is the administration just now re-examining some of these Afghan nationals who are in the country? Why is the CIA, who reportedly worked with the attacker previously, why did they let the FBI take their eye off of the ball? So again, this is Donald Trump’s responsibility. And frankly, his people, everyone from FBI Director Kash Patel to CIA Director John Ratcliffe to Tulsi Gabbard to Kristi Noem, they failed. And heaven help us if there’s another failure like this in the future. We know that there are 200,000 Afghan nationals in this country right now. And we hope and pray that the vetting was more rigorous in their case than it was for this attacker.
