RCP Podcast: TrumpRx Too Big To Ignore? Kamala Reboot, DHS Funding Countdown, “The American Manifesto”

Friday on the RealClearPolitics podcast, Andrew Walworth, Carl Cannon, and Tom Bevan discuss TrumpRx, the new government website offering discounts on dozens of prescription drugs, and whether Kamala Harris relaunching her campaign account is a soft launch for 2028. The panel also asks if the threat of another partial government shutdown still looms as the fight over ICE funding threatens to shut down the entire Department of Homeland Security. Later in the show, RCP contributor John Waters explains why America should celebrate its heroes and his new piece, “The American Manifesto” The show wraps up with Super Bowl predictions and the panel’s picks for the weekly “You Cannot Be Serious?!” roundup of entertaining headlines. You can listen to the show live each day at 11:00 a.m. on SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly Channel 111 and then on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and here on our website. *** The show opens with the launch of TrumpRx, a new government website offering discounts on prescription drugs. “It wasn’t really called Obamacare, but everyone put his name on it. They promised it would lower costs and you could keep your doctor, but none of that turned out to be true,” Bevan opined. “Here comes Trump, and he’s put his name on the website and promises it will lower costs — and we’ll see if it delivers.” *** After that, around minute 7, the group discusses Kamala Harris rebranding her campaign account for the future. Is this a soft launch for another presidential run? “She’s deciding whether or not to run for president,” Cannon said. “The three of us are convinced Gavin Newsom is running, and she’s been ambivalent, at least publicly. My guess is she hasn’t fully decided, and she’s trying to keep her name in the conversation.” “She’s leading in the RCP Average right now, handsomely. She’s over Newsom by 5.8 points. She’s at 29%. Everyone else is in single digits,” Walworth added. “I’ve got two words for you: Richard Nixon.” *** Next, 16 minutes into the show, it looks like funding for the Department of Homeland Security will lapse at the end of next week-that would shut down ICE and Border Patrol, but also TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard. Is Washington ready for this fight? “I don’t think the Democrats are willing to shut down TSA, and I think the Trump administration would find the money to keep it going,” Cannon said. “But how long are the Democrats going to get away with this? They say: ‘If we don’t get exactly what we want, we’re going to shut the government down, and we’re going to blame you, the Republicans, so it’s really your shutdown.’ A child could see through this logic-but the American media can’t.” *** Around minute 22, John Waters joins the panel to discuss his new piece for RCP’s “America Turns 250” series: “The American Manifesto” “I think in the last 100 years, we’ve institutionalized the dissent, criticism, cynicism, and pessimism of the protest movements of the 60s, which did a lot to increase freedom in our country and made us more creative,” Waters said. “But at this stage, the question is whether we foreground the critics and the protesters, or we foreground the heroes. And my bias is toward heroes.” “The American dream is alive, kids,” Waters said. “My dad told me I was spoiled, and I said thank you. I live in Nebraska. I’m surrounded by families, schools, kids working at fast-food restaurants. They’re chipper. Friday nights are high school basketball night.” *** Finally, at minute 37, the group makes Super Bowl predictions and gives their picks for the weekly “You Cannot Be Serious?!” roundup of entertaining headlines. *** Don’t miss a single episode of the RealClearPolitics radio show – subscribe at Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
