RCP Panel: Two Republicans Leading Polls Against Divided Dems in California’s Jungle Primary for Governor

The panel on RCP’s podcast last night looked at a polling anomaly in the jungle primary for the California governor race, where RCP’s average shows two Republicans — Chad Bianco and Steve Hilton — at the front of the pack amid a divided Democratic field. “So if the election were held today and the polls were accurate, you would have two Republicans make the runoff in a blue state-which would be insane,” Tom Bevan explained. “Eric Swalwell is running, Katie Porter’s running, Tom Steyer is running, and Xavier Becerra is running. So they’re dividing the Democratic field.” “If all these Democrats stay in the race, there’s a chance they may not make the runoff, which would be a real shocker,” he said. California native Carl Cannon set him straight: “Californians are not going to vote for two Republicans in the top spot. One of them may make it though, and that would be interesting.” “If you had a runoff with one Republican and one of these Democrats, you might have a contest that might be fun, but there’s no way this is going to hold up,” Cannon said. “The California primary is not till June.”
