The guys on Wednesday’s edition of the RealClearPolitics podcast commented on President Trump’s culture war focus at last night’s State of the Union address. Is he setting a trap for Democrats by targeting an issue like gender transitions for kids? “This is one of those 80/20 issues,” co-host Andrew Walworth said about Trump’s focus on transgender youth. “Everyone’s saying it’s the economy, economy, economy – but these are the cultural issues that resonate with people and remind people where the Democrats stand on some of this stuff.” “It’s not just that it’s an 80/20 issue nationally – Republicans are unified on these cultural issues, while they disagree on economic policy,” added presidential historian Tevi Troy. “There’s no disagreement within the coalition on these transgender and cultural issues.” “He picked on these issues. He chose these issues that do make the Democrats look out there,” Carl Cannon said. “To have the public schools conspire to not tell the parent and transition a child, and have a Democratic judge support the school – not the parents, not the kid – and then the kid comes to their senses.” “But it was tough for the Democrats on that, too. They have a transgender member in the hall. When they hear that, they think Donald Trump’s pandering and being a bigot,” Cannon said. “So he made it hard for them.”
