RCP Podcast: A 78-Year-Old Freshman Senator?

The panel, Monday on the RealClearPolitics podcast, zooms in on the Senate race in Maine, where Gov. Janet Mills is facing Graham Platner for the Democratic nomination. They review Mark Leibovich’s new profile of Mills in The Atlantic: “A 79-Year-Old Freshman Senator?” “She’s a two-term governor. She’s well known and fairly well liked in Maine. She has no real strikes against her, except she is 78,” RCP co-founder Tom Bevan commented. “Platner has his own baggage, but he is appealing to the younger demographic and the idea that her time has passed and it’s time for some new blood, some ‘new lipids’ in the Democratic Party, and that argument seems to be winning the day, particularly in the aftermath of what we saw happen with Joe Biden.” Platner leads Mills by 13 in the RCP Average for the Democratic nomination, while general election polls show Platner winning by 7 and Mills losing by 2 against Republican Sen. Susan Collins. “People age differently, and she promised she’s only going to serve for one term,” Andrew Walworth said. “But he points out, too, that Maine has the oldest population of any state in America. So maybe age won’t be such a factor.” “Well, by the end of that one term, she’ll be 85, so that’s a good idea,” Carl Cannon added. “But isn’t Trump 79? Isn’t he about to turn 80 in June?”
