Sean Trende: Inflation Hits Voters Everywhere, From McDonald’s to Outback

The panel on Tuesday’s RealClearPolitics podcast discussed the latest CPI inflation numbers from the Labor Department, and a new CNN poll where two-thirds of Americans blame Trump’s policies for prices going up. “This is exactly the news Republicans did not want to hear,” Tom Bevan said. “Inflation is the thing that touches everybody, right?” “When your 401(k) goes up or down, it’s sort of abstract. But when you go and pay $ 4 or $ 5 a gallon for gas or milk, or $ 4.99 for eggs, that is real,” he said. “So obviously, not good news for the president or for the Republican Party six months out from an election.” “With the most basic understanding of geopolitics, you could conclude that attacking a Middle Eastern country is going to raise the price of oil,” Sean Trende said. “That’s not just bad for Republicans and President Trump. It’s bad for Americans,” he added. “Whether your evening out is at McDonald’s, or a fancy steakhouse, or ordering DoorDash from Outback, all those prices are up. Everyone feels it.” “The two cheap little lobsters that you get from Outback are $ 45 now!” Trende said. “That’s what you would pay for a fancy restaurant a few years ago. It’s really not good.”
