Haley Stevens Viral Clip in Full Context: As A Senator, I’ll Be Articulating On Our Behalf — “That’s The Michigan Way!”
Michigan Senate candidate Haley Stevens went massively viral with her goofy-sounding endorsement of Michigan state House Rep. Joe Tate this weekend HALEY STEVENS: And women-and then don’t get me started on Joe Tate. Truly the best of Michigan. His accolades run deep. All right: veteran NFL football player, at Michigan State, leading in Lansing. Did I get all the accolades in? Tate is my longtime friend. We go back to before either of us ever put up our-you know, while we were putting up our hands, but before we ever got elected into office. And I want people to see the true Michigan. I want them to see who we are, who we have been and what we are capable of. And that is why I am running for U.S. Senate in this time, right now, for us. What is the U.S. Senate? It’s a chief lawmaking role for the state and for the nation. We get to send two people to that chamber, to the greatest deliberative body in the world. And what am I going to do for us? I’m going to be articulating on our behalf. I am going to be working on our behalf. I am going to be telling the stories on our behalf. And you better believe I’m going to be doing it with a little bit of joy, a little bit of enthusiasm, a little bit of energy and a little bit of stick it to them, because that’s the Michigan way! My friend Joe Tate here mentioned, alongside the mayor and the pastor, the work that I was a part of when it mattered-the work that we cannot forget, the work that Barack Obama led on. There was a Main Street effort in his administration, and we ran right through it: the Great Recession. They were saying, Who’s going to shut out the lights in Detroit? We knew what that meant. They were counting us out. They were flying over us, and they just said, Well, yeah, the industrial sector’s taking a real whack. They might fly off a cliff. Remember that guy who ran against Obama, Mitt Romney, who claimed to be from here, who literally said, Let them go bankrupt? Now, what Obama did, and what I was a part of-not as the one who was in front of the cameras, not as the one sending tweets, but as the one who was there late at night working, taking the calls from Michigan-is that we said, We are not going to let Main Street go. We are not going to let the industrial sector of this country go. Talk to the mayor right now. I’ve toured these facilities with him. I’ve toured these grounds with him. Steel has gone through a lot right now, but all these jobs are here because Obama said that we are going to save General Motors and Chrysler and the 200,000 Michigan jobs. But wait for it, because we used taxpayer dollars to do it, right? Your tax dollars. The nation’s tax dollars. And sometimes people have questions about how we’re using tax dollars, right? Not only did we use those tax dollars and it worked, we were repaid. The government was repaid with interest. So goes the heartbeat of Michigan. So goes the heartbeat of this nation.
