CNN’s Enten: Trump Approval Polls Seem To Have No Bottom, New Second Term Low–Worst Since Nixon
CNN’s Harry Enten says President Trump’s approval numbers are in “an electoral black hole” that seems to have “no bottom,” with numbers comparable to Richard Nixon before his resignation.
HARRY ENTEN, CNN: Is there a bottom? To me, it does not appear that there is one. Trump is heading toward an electoral black hole. I feel like this is one of those magician’s tricks where the floor just falls out from underneath you. That is exactly what is happening with President Trump. Kate is off to the side laughing there. Trump’s approval rating has hit record lows for his second term, all this week. You mentioned the CNN poll at 34%. You think that’s all? How about AP-NORC at 33%? You think that’s all? How about Quinnipiac University at 32%? So you have three different pollsters all saying that Trump is hitting second-term lows this week. In fact, I believe the Quinnipiac result is an all-time low for him. The CNN poll, as you mentioned, Kate, is tied for an all-time low. So, is there a bottom? It does not appear to me that there is one for President Trump. KATE BOLDUAN, CNN: But compare this to history for me, please. ENTEN: Yeah, okay. Let’s compare it to the other presidents who won a second term in the 21st century. You can see it right here. I’m averaging CNN, Quinnipiac and AP. Look at the approval ratings for 21st-century presidents at this point in their second terms. When you average CNN, Quinnipiac and AP, you get 33% for Trump. Obama wasn’t exactly too hot to trot, but he was at least at 41%. How about George W. Bush? The Iraq War was raging at the time, during the 2006 election cycle, and he was still at 38%. Trump has the lowest approval rating of any 21st-century president at this point in a second term. You have to go all the way back to Richard Nixon to find a lower approval rating at this point in a second term. Of course, Nixon was only a few weeks away from resigning at this point in 1974. That is not the comparison you want to be making if you’re Donald John Trump.
