Abdul El-Sayed makes the case for Medicare-For-All during an interview with CNN on Sunday. He acknowledges that it doesn’t look like Senate Democrats would have the votes to pass a “Medicare-For-All” bill no matter how November’s elections go. He suggests a few reforms that Democrats could pass in the interim, such as outlawing pharmacy benefit managers — third-party companies that act as middlemen between prescription drug manufacturers, insurance companies, and pharmacies. “We can walk and chew gum at the same time,” he said. “We need to ban some of the middlemen in our healthcare system, like pharmacy benefit managers, something most people haven’t heard of, but they are a big reason why you pay more for prescription drugs.” “I also think we can start enforcing antitrust policy when it comes to big healthcare,” he said. “Medicare-For-All is where we need to go. My hope is that coming out of the 2026 midterms and out of 2028, we’re going to be on our way to a Senate majority to get this done.” “In the interim, we’re going to do everything we can,” El-Sayed said.
