ADL’s Greenblatt: Tucker Carlson’s Anti-Israel Anti-Semitism Is Despicable, Repellent
Anti-Defamation League head Jonathan Greenblatt commented on Tucker Carlson interviewing podcaster Nick Fuentes, Thursday morning on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “It’s not canceling someone to say you don’t want a Nazi on your platform. That’s actually not cancellation-that’s common sense, right?” he said.
JOE SCARBOROUGH, MSNBC: Seven million Jews on this planet now because of one Holocaust and one savage attack after Jews after another. So there is no-no quarter can be given anywhere. Which leads to the next very sad reality in America, and that is young men in America on the far left and far right growing more anti-Semitic. There’s a real sort of civil war going on right now in the MAGA universe. Yeah. And it’s pulled in the Heritage Foundation. Nick Fuentes-going around. And I had Ari Emanuel call me and say-you know, Ari’s not, you know, thrown off by too many things-he said he listened to Nick Fuentes for two and a half hours and he turned it off, you know, being platformed. And it was the most horrifying thing he saw. He said that young men today-yeah-growing up in the age of Trump-yeah-like thinking that it’s okay to think that way. Yeah. And being platformed-and then having the Heritage Foundation-I mean, how many times has Kevin Roberts had to circle around because the Wall Street Journal editorial page is calling him out for what he is? JONATHAN GREENBLATT (CEO, ADL): Laundering Tucker Carlson is outrageous. What he has said-by the way, not just with Nick Fuentes (that was particularly repellent), but what Tucker has said over the years-anti-Israel and anti-Semitic, it’s trafficking in conspiracies. It’s despicable. And I have no explanation for why Kevin Roberts would downplay or dismiss that. It’s not canceling someone to say you don’t want a Nazi on your platform. That’s actually not cancellation-that’s common sense, right? I hope that-you know-we’ve seen Senator Cruz and Senator McConnell be strong on this, which is great. We need all Republicans and all conservatives, like we need all Democrats and all progressives, to say clearly and emphatically: anti-Semitism, and all forms of hate, are wrong. WILLOIE GEIST: So what is, Jonathan, the intervention here? Because I can say, as the father of a teenage boy, they are being fed some stuff-and luckily we have a relationship where he comes to me and asks me about it and we talk through it. But in this age of social media and podcasts and all those things where people are platformed, they just are, and it makes its way to young men who are home, some of them, and without community. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What’s the intervention? How do we get in the way of this? JONATHAN GREENBLATT (CEO, ADL): Look, I think the best thing we can do as parents-I’ve got three boys myself-is to be engaged and involved. I mean, letting your kid use social media alone is like sending them to the mall, you know, at six years old and letting them wander around. You would never do that. At the same time, you know, the tricky thing is there’s no silver bullet. Instagram and X have embedded themselves, and that’s where young people are getting their news. And the news that your son gets and my son gets are totally different depending on the algorithm. So I actually think the social media companies bear responsibility. We need them to finally enforce the terms of service to keep our kids safe.
