Brit Hume: Democrats Putting Themselves In A Position Where They Are Resisting Law Enforcement Stopping Crime
FOX News chief political analyst Brit Hume on Monday’s “Special Report” said President Donald Trump is leading the Democrats into a political trap in their continuing opposition to his crime crackdown.
GILLIAN TURNER, FOX NEWS: I want to talk to you about our other top story tonight, which is obviously crime in big cities. 35 people shot in Chicago over the weekend, even as the governor, the Illinois governor, is rejecting President Trump’s threats to send the National Guard there. Take a listen to Pritzker. I’ll get your response. GOV. JB PRITZKER (D-IL): You know what kind of help we want? Civilian law enforcement help. We would like ATF agents to help us take more guns off the streets. We would like FBI, again, to coordinate with our local law enforcement to help catch perpetrators of crimes. If they would do that, we would welcome that. TURNER: I mean, he essentially wants the guard troops who were seen picking up trash over the course of last week. BRIT HUME, FOX NEWS CHIEF POLITICAL ANALYST: Well, this is an interesting situation because there’s obviously a political imperative in the Democratic Party to do all one can to resist Donald Trump. It’s been that way for a long time, and it still is. And so you see these politicians in a situation where, as you saw in Washington, D.C., you surge forces, including the kind of agents that Pritzker was talking about, plus troops into a city, and the crime goes down, and sharply and immediately. And so as these politicians express their dislike of the president’s actions to please some of their many in their base, at the same time, they’re putting themselves in a situation where they’re resisting law enforcement trying to stop crime. I think that, in the broad voter base in this country, that’s a mistake. And I think the president understands that, which is why he keeps talking about this. It’s not entirely clear how much he’s just trolling them, or whether he intends to do it, or both. But the fact is, he’s leading them into what I think is a political trap of appearing to impose law enforcement on crime-ridden cities, and a lot of these Democratic cities are just that.
