Brit Hume: Outpouring For Charlie Kirk Shows He Had A Much Bigger Impact On The Country Than We May Have Known

FOX News senior political analyst Brit Hume addressed the political and religious impact of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Monday’s broadcast of “Special Report.” “This outpouring that we’re hearing, which as you noted earlier even is occurring overseas, is really something to behold,” Hume told host Bret Baier.

BRET BAIER, ‘SPECIAL REPORT’ HOST: So we’re now pouring of support for the late Charlie Kirk up on Capitol Hill and Statuary Hall. Let’s bring in Fox News Chief Political Analyst Brit Hume. Brit, good evening. You know, we’re going to get to a prayer here. These lawmakers feel it’s important to have this moment. We’ve seen moments across the country, vigils, memorials, moments of silence at sporting events. Where do you think all of this goes? BRIT HUME: Well, I think, Bret, that what we’re seeing here with these leaders, they’re expressing not only their own feelings of grief and regret that this happened and they’re trying to honor this man killed far too soon in life, but they’re reflecting also what’s been happening around the country to an extent I think most of them were surprised by. I know I’ve been surprised by it. This outpouring that we’re hearing, which as you noted earlier even is occurring overseas, is really something to behold. It’s quite striking in the fact that there’s been, what, several 30,000 or more chapters or people trying to open new chapters of Turning Point in their places and on their campuses. That tells you something. Charlie Kirk had a much bigger impact on the country than we may have known at the time, we who cover national politics. He was out there doing this and he was doing it on campus, after campus, talking to people. And then, of course, there’s been this terribly negative outpouring on the other side, on the left. Not from political figures so much, although some of them said some remarkable things, but mostly from left figures who were well-known, who have a big megaphone. Some lower political figures have spoken up as well. And the attacks on him have been shocking, scurrilous. And I think that that has added to the reaction in his favor. This story, this murder, this assassination is going to have a long tail, Bret, I think. BRET BAIER: Yeah, and it does seem like some of those most outlandish statements we’ve seen online and on television and other places seem to really hurt the left in a political sense. I mean, long-term hurt, potentially. BRIT HUME: Yeah, I think that’s right, Bret. I mean, I think to a considerable extent, the reaction to Charlie Kirk is a reflection of what has been the reaction to Donald Trump. Donald Trump has triggered what is widely referred to as Trump Derangement Syndrome, which refers to an absolute inability to see Donald Trump as anything other than a danger, a threat to society, a national emergency. Charlie Kirk went around the country supporting President Trump, by and large, but with his own agenda as well. And the reaction is very similar. It is irrational. It is vicious. It is extraordinarily harsh. And I think, you know, Americans as a people have long thought that ordinary decency requires that you don’t speak ill of the dead. You don’t speak, certainly not in the immediate aftermath of a death. You just, you don’t do that. That’s not how Americans react. That’s not how most people in the world react. And yet we’ve seen some of that. And I think that you’re right, Bret, that it’s been so poisonous and seems so poisonous to so many people that it reflects badly on the American left and therefore, to some extent, on the political party that represents the Americans. BRET BAIER: Yeah. And last thing, Brit, you’re a man of faith. You talk about it. Young people sometimes don’t talk about it. But now, in the wake of this, I’ve heard a lot more of it. I’ve heard a lot more of expressing their faith and a want, a need for faith in their life. BRIT HUME: It was certainly central to Charlie Kirk’s message and the way he lived his life. And, you know, it may have helped to create a new kind of permission structure on that very thing in life. And I know that I’m reading that the churches were filled to a much greater extent than usual this Sunday. That’s a sign that something very positive may have come out of this owing to Charlie Kirk and the way he lived his life.
