Corleys ousted in first round of U.S. Open
Aug. 29—NEW YORK — The Corley sisters, Ivana and Carmen, were defeated Friday afternoon in the first round of women's doubles competition at the U.S. Open.
The sisters, both former state champions at Eldorado and teammates at the University of Oklahoma, fell 6-2, 6-4 to the seventh-seeded team of Asia Muhammad of the United States and Demi Schuurs of The Netherlands.
The sisters, who won a first-round match at the U.S. Open last year, came into this grand slam event, the last of the season, as an unseeded wild card tandem.
Their serve was broken five times Friday, and at one point they lost 10 straight games.
Earlier this summer, the Corley sisters won their first two WTA-sanctioned tournaments, in Rhode Island and Portugal.
