Hakeem Jeffries: Trump Has Failed America—”Liberation Day Tariffs Were a Disaster”
House Democratic Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York pledged to voters that “help is on the way” on the one-year anniversary of Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, during a DNC briefing on Thursday. “Donald Trump’s policies have been a disaster. And Republicans have failed the American people, particularly on the economy,” Jeffries said. “During the Trump presidency, costs haven’t gone down-costs have gone up.” Jeffries said that after one year, it is clear President Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs have not accomplished what Trump said they would. “Donald Trump has not managed to liberate the economy. What Donald Trump has done is decimate the bank accounts of the American people.” “Democrats in the House and the Senate are going to continue to focus on making life better for the American people, on driving down the high cost of living, and on fixing our broken health care system so that the American people can afford to go see a doctor when they need one,” he said. “America is far too expensive, and Republican policies are a direct contributor to the fact that far too many people across this country are struggling to make ends meet.” “Liberation Day was a complete and total failure,” he said. “The trade deficit has not been closed. Manufacturing jobs have not been created. And life has become far too expensive. But help is on the way.”

And Republicans have failed the American people, particularly on the economy. Donald Trump promised that costs would go down on day one. But of course, in the United States of America during the Trump presidency, costs haven’t gone down-costs have gone up. And we can thank the Trump tariffs for imposing thousands of dollars in additional costs on everyday Americans, small business owners, and farmers throughout the country. Donald Trump has not managed to liberate the economy. What Donald Trump has done is decimate the bank accounts of the American people. Since the beginning of this presidency-and certainly as a result of what took place on so-called Liberation Day-we’ve seen costs in this country skyrocket under the presidency of Donald Trump. The cost of groceries has skyrocketed. Housing costs are out of control. Health insurance premiums are through the roof. Gas prices have dramatically increased. Child care costs are out of control. Prices in the United States of America have gone up as a direct result of the economic policies put into place by Donald Trump and House and Senate Republicans, who unfortunately continue to function like nothing more than a reckless rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s extreme agenda. Democrats in the House and the Senate are going to continue to focus on making life better for the American people, on driving down the high cost of living, and on fixing our broken health care system so that the American people can afford to go see a doctor when they need one. America is far too expensive, and Republican policies are a direct contributor to the fact that far too many people across this country-everyday Americans, small business owners, and farmers-are struggling to make ends meet, cannot thrive, and can barely survive in the Trump economy. Liberation Day was a complete and total failure. The trade deficit has not been closed. Manufacturing jobs have not been created. And life has become far too expensive. But help is on the way. And in November, Democrats are going to take back control of the House and the Senate so we can actually liberate the American people from Donald Trump and the extreme Republican agenda.
