Jason Riley: Trump Did An Effective Job Of Painting Democrats Into A Corner Of Defending Extreme, Unpopular Positions
Jason Riley on ‘Special Report,’ reacted to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. Riley mentioned how President Trump cornered Democrats over immigration, the economy, and ’80-20 issues:’
JASON RILEY: He did a very effective job of painting Democrats into a corner of defending extreme positions that are broadly unpopular. Whether it’s deporting violent illegal immigrants, shielding them from deportation, opposing voter I.D. Laws, sex change procedures for minors, he forced Democrats to defend these positions. They are 80-20 issues, where a large majority of the public is on one side and Progressive Democrats are on the other. I was also struck by his economic message, though, Bret, where he, I think his overselling how well this economy is doing for working class voters and middle class voters. But, he also remind people how we got into this mess, through democratic policies, and whether or not we want to return those same Democrats to fix the problems they have caused. One of his best lines was on illegal immigration, not the one you mentioned but the one he said the only thing standing between us and another round of open immigration, unchecked borders, is me and the Republicans, in Congress. And you might think that’s an extreme position but you look around the gallery and you see people sitting with pins that disparage I.C.E. When you think that I.C.E. Is a bigger problem with illegal immigration you’ve not only lost the plot you’ve lost a lot of the public.
