Jonathan Capehart: Trump’s Ridealong Will Close Streets, The Trump Show Is Exhausting

MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart said the “Trump show is exhausting” while commenting on the president’s upcoming ride-along with the National Guard in Washington, D.C.

CHRIS JANSING, MSNBC HOST: There’s no doubt about this, Jonathan, that the administration, for all the criticism that it has taken, for the folks who live in D.C. who have literally, physically chased law enforcement out of their neighborhoods, they believe that this is a positive for them. As Monica mentioned, Janie Vance, Secretary Hegseth, yesterday at Union Station, now tonight the president deciding he’s going to go out and be front and center in this crackdown. What do you make of it? JONATHAN CAPEHART, ‘THE WEEKEND’ CO-HOST: The Trump show is exhausting. What he has done to the District of Columbia, bringing in the National Guard, having Republican governors send some of their National Guard to Washington, D.C., to engage in law enforcement in a city that has dropping crime rates, and you put up the headline that it looks like this crackdown on crime really looks like a crackdown on immigration, looks more like an immigration enforcement action. The people of Washington, and right now, as you can tell, I am not in Washington at the moment, but I live in Washington. And the idea that the city of Washington needs the National Guard is ridiculous. The mayor has been on our show saying that she, one, would like Congress to restore the billion dollars that was cut from the district, but two, would love to have 500 police officers, people who are trained to interact with the public and to be law enforcement officers in the district, not the military. And when it comes to the president’s ride-along, or whatever it is he’s going to do tonight, doesn’t he have other things to worry about? The war, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, what’s happening in Gaza? I love your question, your quip to Monica about the Secret Service, whether they’re thrilled with this soon-to-be ride-along. Chris, you have covered the White House. You know when the president moves, what happens? Streets get closed, the perimeter expands. Who is he going to see? What is he going to see? And more crucially, what is he going to do? When he said, we are going to do a job, that’s why I said the Trump show is exhausting. And I can’t even begin to imagine what that spectacle is going to look like when he goes to the streets. Thank you.
