Mamdani: Meeting Trump “Felt Like The Most Productive Meeting We Could Have Had”
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani celebrated his election victory and a successful meeting with President Trump on “The Adam Friedland Show.” He discusses what is was like to meet Trump and visit the White House:
ADAM FRIEDLAND: Did he give you a tour of the White House? What was the weirdest thing he showed you? He had to have shown you one weird thing. ZOHRAN MAMDANI: He showed me the portraits of all the presidents in the Cabinet Room… The FDR was beautiful. It was really nice. And we talked about FDR for a little bit. Honestly, you don’t have the LaGuardia record if you don’t have FDR. We talked about that. I walked in – first, you get there, and it’s just you alone, and there are two people guiding you through to get to the Oval Office. They’re like, We want you to see this room and that room. And then I sit down waiting for the time of the meeting, and in front of me are all these different coffee-table books. One of them is “UFC at the White House.” I had no idea, but I was flipping through that… It was a visualization of what the octagon is going to look like. ADAM FRIEDLAND: Can I ask you a question? How did you not laugh? How did you keep a straight face during the press conference? We were all dying. ZOHRAN MAMDANI: Honestly, I was just thinking about New York City. The whole time I was trying to think about the difference between having a White House that is working toward an affordability agenda and one that’s making it harder to live in the city. That’s what kept me focused. ADAM FRIEDLAND: Do you feel like the president sees your popularity? He loves the ratings – tons of reporters. He sees you; I think you’re handsome. I think he thought you were handsome. Did you have eyes up here, Mr. President? You were elected because you were trusted on your policies for affordability. Do you think he maybe tried to swagger-jack a little bit? ZOHRAN MAMDANI: I actually think there are a lot of places of disagreement with the president. One of the things that was remarkable to me is I told him that our campaign started on October 23rd of last year. But the moment when some people started paying attention was after he won the presidency. We did the video on Forom Road, Hillside Avenue. We talked to Trump voters and asked them why they voted for him, and it went back to cost of living – cheaper groceries. That was a lot of our campaign. And he liked that it was one in ten, right? He liked the one in ten. … ADAM FRIEDLAND: Did you expect him to like you as much as he did? ZOHRAN MAMDANI: I was trying to prepare for a lot of different situations. ADAM FRIEDLAND: When you’re on that plane taking that selfie – that could have gone in any direction. Did that feel like best-case scenario? ZOHRAN MAMDANI: It honestly felt like the most productive meeting we could have had. A meeting where we talked about ULURP, groceries, ConEd, rent, child care – that feels like the best meeting you could have.
