RCP Podcast: Newsom Broadens Attack on Trump, NJ Governor Primary, Investment Account for Every Baby, Adams Memorial

Wednesday on the RealClearPolitics radio show — weeknights at 6:00 p.m. on SiriusXM’s POTUS Channel 124 and then on Apple, Spotify, and here on our website — Andrew Walworth, Tom Bevan, and Carl Cannon discuss the ongoing showdown over President Trump’s deportation program, last night’s New Jersey gubernatorial primaries, Trump’s plan to give every baby born a savings account, and the planned John Adams Memorial. *** In the first segment, California Gov. Gavin Newsom gave a televised address criticizing President Trump, while Trump said he was going to liberate the “trash heap” city of Los Angeles from “foreign enemies.” Was this Newsom’s unofficial confirmation he’s running for president in 2028? “I think the argument Democrats are trying to make that could work is that the real issue here is the deportation policy itself, that Trump has gone beyond his mandate to get hardened criminals and dangerous people,” Andrew Walworth said. *** In the next segment, at minute 16, an analysis of the results of last night’s New Jersey gubernatorial primaries. Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli will face off in November. “No real surprises in terms of who won, and New Jersey and Virginia are always kind of bellwether states that we like to read tea leaves on,” Tom Bevan said. “Gov. Phil Murphy is term-limited, and it has been 60 years since Democrats have won a third term in a row here, but the party that wins the White House usually ends up losing that gubernatorial race the following year. So we have these competing historical crosscurrents.” “It is a state where Donald Trump lost by 16 points in 2020 and then lost by six points in 2024, so it moved pretty handily right. The question is whether that trend continues,” Bevan added. *** After that, at minute 22, details about the plan buried inside Trump’s “Big, Beautiful” budget bill to give every U.S. baby a $ 1,000 investment account at birth. “We have $ 36 trillion of debt, when every American is born, they inherit a debt of $ 270,000,” Cannon said. “So what we’re going to do is give that person $ 1,000… Year after year after year of Congress doling out money that we have to borrow.” “It does turn every child into an investor. Having exposure to the market might encourage savings, and your relatives can also make contributions to this account,” Walworth added. It’s worth noting that an investment in an S&P 500 index fund 65 years ago would have earned an inflation-adjusted return of about 5,000%. *** Next, at minute 30, RCP contributor Maggie Miller interviewed Daniel Yergin, author of “The New Map: Energy, Climate and the Clash of Nations,” about how America can meet its current and future energy needs at RCP’s “Energy Future Forum” last month. *** Finally, minute 35 Carl Cannon talks to Jackie Cushman, chair of the Adams Memorial Commission and president of the Adams Memorial Fund, about the planned monument on the National Mall to honor President John Adams, who once lamented, “Mausoleum, statues, monuments will never be erected to me,” and his family. “It’s not a fast process,” Cushman said. “I think it’s a great time for this project because we’re approaching the 250th anniversary of our country, people are so interested in how we were founded, so this is the perfect time to bring up this project.” “President John Quincy Adams is often overlooked, but he served our country so faithfully in the House for 17 years. Imagine his life, he was born a British subject, and then he served overlapping with Abraham Lincoln in Congress. I mean that is an unimaginable span of time, including serving as Secretary of State and overseeing the Monroe Doctrine. His son then served as ambassador to the Court of St James during the Civil War and convinced the British not to recognize the Confederacy. So, imagine how they changed history by themselves. Just a very accomplished family, very focused on service to God, service to country, service to family.” *** Don’t miss a single episode of the RealClearPolitics weeknight radio show – subscribe at Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
