RCP Podcast: Trump’s Non-Traditional Diplomacy, AI Hits White Collar Workers, Saving Wikipedia From Itself

Thursday on the RealClearPolitics podcast, Andrew Walworth, Carl Cannon, and Tom Bevan break down what we’ve learned so far about the meeting last night between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. And then, the group discussed reports that members of Trump’s inner circle are moving to military bases in response to threats against their lives and families, and the impact AI is having on the job market. Finally, Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger joins Carl Cannon to discuss his plan to fix what’s gone wrong with the site, and his new plan to catalogue all of the other online encyclopedias into a single, open-source format. You can listen to the show weeknights at 6:00 p.m. on SiriusXM’s POTUS Channel 124 and then on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and here on our website. *** First, the group discussed a programming update for the RealClearPolitics show on SiriusXM. Starting next Wednesday, November 5, the show will be broadcast live at 11:00 a.m., five days per week, on the new Megyn Kelly Channel (111). *** After that, starting around minute 3, the group reviews President Trump’s trip to Asia. The president rated his two-hour meeting yesterday with his Chinese counterpart as a 12 out of 10. What details do we have so far about the preliminary deal on issues ranging from tariffs and soybeans to fentanyl smuggling and rare earth minerals? “The rare earths thing is huge, but Trump said this is a one-year deal, they’re going to renegotiate this every year,” Tom Bevan pointed out. “We’ll see whether China sticks to the deal, once the official details are hammered out, but a year is not a long time!” “The status quo with China was unacceptable,” Bevan also said. “Has Trump’s approach been chaotic, and at times haphazard? Yes, but that’s part of his genius. Even if he just took China, and shook them by their lapels, and we end up exactly where we started, that’s not a bad thing. China was robbing us blind. They are an important trade partner, and we should have a good relationship, but it should be based on rules that both sides accept.” Carl Cannon added: “If I’m going to be critical of Trump-remember when Joe Biden was president, he was taking Hunter Biden on these trips and he was doing side deals, right? To profit himself personally.” *** And then, around minute 13, the panel considers a new report from The Atlantic that multiple Trump cabinet members and staffers have moved into military housing, saying they are worried about protests and death threats after the murder of Charlie Kirk. “My guess is this may have predated Charlie Kirk,” Cannon said. “The story opens with a vignette of Stephen Miller’s wife coming out of her house and being confronted by a stranger who threatened her — in Arlington, Virginia.” “The woman who approached Katie Miller said, ‘We’re watching you.’ And this was the day after Charlie Kirk was assassinated,” Bevan added. “It’s beyond harsh; it is threatening violence.” “The Atlantic is a very liberal news outlet. It broke this story, and its editors and reporters are clearly appalled by this behavior. So, credit where it’s due,” Cannon concluded. *** In the next segment, minute 21, recent layoffs at major companies appear to be focused more on white collar and management roles. Is this the result of advances in AI? “I was watching TV today, and there was a robot you can buy that can do housework-it walks, it goes downstairs. We’re only months into this, and we’ve already got robots,” Cannon said. “It begs the question-in a free-market economy, how do people support themselves? And this is just the beginning.” “Before they kill you, they’re going to clean your house and walk your dog,” Tom Bevan joked. “AI is very quickly going to be able to write legal briefs, but it is still a long way away from having a robot that can fix your air conditioner or your plumbing,” Bevan added. “We’ve denigrated people who work with their hands for a long time. But maybe the pendulum’s swinging back in the other direction.” *** Finally, starting at minute 27, Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger joins Carl Cannon to discuss his plan to fix what’s gone wrong with the site, and his new plan to catalogue all of the other online encyclopedias into a single, open-source format.
