RCP’s Wegmann: We’re Getting A Sense Of What The Retribution That Trump Promised Looks Like
RCP White House correspondent Philip Wegmann reacts to DNI Tulsi Gabbard’s appearance at today’s White House briefing on Wednesday’s “Special Report.”
BRET BAIER, HOST: Phil, you were in the White House briefing room today questioning the Director of National Intelligence among other questions whether weaponization is also this referral and what that signals. Take a listen to her answer. DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE TULSI GABBARD: I think that’s a very disrespectful attack on the American people who deserve the truth. They deserve to have faith and trust in the integrity of our democratic republic which is under bent, which has been undermined by President Obama through his direction of this manufactured fake intelligence document knowing that it was filled with lies and knowing that it would and could then be used for all of the actions that came after. BAIER: So what was your take overall from the briefing room? PHILIP WEGMANN, REAL CLEAR POLITICS WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: We’re beginning to get a sense of what that retribution that President Trump promised on the campaign trail actually looks like and it’s going to take some time. Director Gabbard today, she dodged when she was asked if this should be referred to the DOJ and what crimes he should be charged with. She said that she wasn’t a lawyer. But of course, this administration, they know that presidents enjoy broad presidential immunity and certainly they won that case at the Supreme Court last year. But notably, while Obama enjoys immunity, Brennan, Comey, and others do not. And I think that the answer that Gabbard gave there and then Karoline Levitt followed up with was that they wanted to figure out what the truth was. There was new facts in this declassified report and they want accountability. For now though, they’re leaving the question of how that accountability comes to the Department of Justice and once again, it’s in Pam Bondi’s life.
