Rep. Jasmine Crockett: I Know People Believe I’m A Partisan Hack, But “I Really Take The Time To Try To Educate People”

MSNBC: Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) joins MSNBC’s “The Weekend” to discuss Elon Musk’s departure heading DOGE after his chaotic tenure, and the damage from Musk’s government slashing efforts that cannot be undone.

EUGENE DANIELS, HOST: One of the reasons Congresswoman that you and other of your colleagues are going into whether the red districts or just going and — and having town halls is because Republicans seem like they don’t want to defend some of the things that that President Trump wants to do, or the unpopular things.   I want to play for you though, something from JPMorgan Chase CEO, Jamie Dimon, and get your reaction on the other side.   (BEGIN VT)   JAMIE DIMON, CEO, JPMORGAN CHASE: We have problems and we got to deal with them. And –and then the biggest one underlying both that is the enemy within. I — I’m not as worried about China. And is an, is an — is a potential adversary. What I really worry about is us. Can we get our own act together, our own values, our own capability or own management.   (END VT)   DANIELS: Now, Jamie Dimon is not a bleeding liberal. So, you know, someone like him saying that he has a lot of concerns with how this administration is operating. And more importantly, the impacts that on everyday Americans, what is your reaction to that?   CROCKETT: No, I think that everyone should be concerned. Listen, I know that people look at me and probably believe that I’m a partisan hack. But when I am fighting for things like the things that we were fighting against in this bill, the cuts, the reason that you’re seeing these Republican town halls go so bad is that I have explained to my Republican colleagues that on an everyday basis, I am fighting harder for your constituents than you are.   And that is a problem. Like democracy is not working when people’s voices are not being heard. Instead, they have decided that they don’t want to do the bidding of the people that put them into power. They want to do the bidding of the guy that is sitting at the White House, which last time I checked, he only has one — well, two senators and one U.S. representative.   And so maybe, yeah, they should listen. But everybody else should be listening to their constituents. And overall, listen, I know that people thought he was a great businessman, but the reality is that if you knew the — the real on him, you would know that this guy has bankrupted six times, right?   So this, in my opinion is our seventh bankruptcy. The problem is, is that it’s now the United States that is going bankrupt. We are the ones that had a decent economy that was continuing to grow. And now we see the economy shrinking. We now see people that are very concerned because costs have continued to go up despite the false promises that were made.   We now are seeing all of this insidious stuff where it’s a matter of, you know what, let’s rob from the poor, and make sure that we can take care of the rich   CAPEHART: Congresswoman, just to be clear, you are the Congresswoman from Texas, right?   CROCKETT: I am.   CAPEHART: Okay. So, but today you’re taking part in a people’s meetup town hall in Miami Gardens, Florida. How do you expect this town hall to stand apart from the ones we’re seeing Republican lawmakers booed and laughed at this week?   CROCKETT: I don’t have drama at my town halls.   (LAUGHTER)   CROCKETT: I just listen, cause I, I can stand by my votes. I can defend my votes. I don’t have drama. And listen, this is really about —   DANIELS: You read the bills maybe.   CROCKETT: — making sure that we’re having — that part, because especially with your homeboy talking about, he didn’t know that was in the bill. That was absolutely in the original judiciary markup that came out, so I knew about it, and we fought about it, but okay, whatever.   But nevertheless, I think that it’s about the fact that I really take the time to try to educate people. I’m not necessarily saying you got to agree with me or disagree with me, but I at least want you to understand what is going on. And I want to make sure that if you are getting the disinformation or the misinformation that I am correcting the record and back and get up with receipts.   You know, if I got to tell my staff, Hey, go find which page this is on so that people can see it, then I will do that. But I think that right now, what they want people to be is uninformed. They are out there and they are doing these town halls.   And honestly they are finding out that people have actually gotten the real information. So thank you so much for what y’all do, because I know that y’all are constantly on the front lines of making sure that people have accurate and real information instead of living in La La Land. Or trying to pretend that when this administration gives us a bread crumb, we should say, thank you oh king for feeding us because we are starving.   DANIELS: Yeah. Congresswoman, really quick before we let you go. We’ve seen Republicans not do these town halls. You guys are stepping up. What are your Republican colleagues scared of from their constituents?   CROCKETT: Well, you, you just saw, they’re scared of the boos. But listen, I, I am here to kind of repeat a famous line of an amazing president. Don’t boo, vote. And so, I am looking for all these people that are showing up to the town halls to yes, maybe boo, boo, boo. But ultimately I need you to vote, and I need you to vote for people that are going to care about you.   I’m not looking for people that necessarily agree with me on everything because the democracy probably works best when there’s a little bit of disagreement, and we somehow come to the middle. But it doesn’t work when we literally have people that are following a mad man that can’t even go and do a simple speech that he reads off a teleprompter to congratulate graduates of West Point, and without going off until, you know, granddaddy land where he just starts to rant about random things.   We deserve better in this country. And we deserve leaders that have courage. And I am asking that even if they aren’t necessarily on my side of the aisle, start to elect people that have courage, courage to represent you, whether it is during election time or whether it is once they’ve been elected.
