Rep. Sarah McBride: Rahm Emanuel And Gavin Newsom Statements About Transgender Have Been “Overcorrections”
Delaware Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride told Politico’s Dasha Burns, in an interview which will be published Sunday, that Democrats like Rahm Emanuel and Gavin Newsom who staking out sligfhtly more moderate positions on transgender issues are making an “overcorrection.”
DASHA BURNS, POLITICO: I think you are kind of seeing an attempt to course correct from some prominent Democrats like Rahm Emanuel was recently asked by Megyn Kelly whether a man could become a woman, and he said no. Gavin Newsom recently said that he believes transgender athletes shouldn’t compete in women’s sports. Do you worry about an overcorrection here? REP. SARAH MCBRIDE: I do believe that, that those statements have been overcorrected, yes. But I also believe that we –and look, I don’t wanna also question the authenticity. I don’t know the motivations for some of those comments. I don’t want to question the authenticity of those beliefs if those are, are their authentic beliefs, you know, people can have a conversation, but I don’t believe that that is the place we need to go. … Republicans are the ones that are obsessed with this issue. That’s one of my gripes with sort of the Rahm’s framing as he perpetually accepts this notion that. The Democratic Party is more interested in in bathrooms than classrooms, and that’s just not true.
