South Point boys tennis' James and Rex Dover make history with NCHSAA state title

Brothers James and Rex Dover seem to have a knack for breakthrough achievements.

After helping the South Point boys tennis team to its first NCHSAA 3A state title last spring, the Dover brothers were at it again Saturday, returning to Belmont with the program’s first individual titles in the sport.

The Red Raider standouts knocked off East Lincoln’s Carson Brown and Lawson Miller (6-3, 6-2) to claim the 3A championship at Burlington Tennis Center.

They are the second Gaston County duo to claim individual state gold, joining Forestview’s Kyle Craft and Drew Henry, who accomplished the feat 25 years ago.

In opening-round play, the South Point team earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Piedmont’s Tucker Bramlett and Brady Hayes. It was followed by a 7-5, 6-3 win over the Carrboro pairing of Lucas Miyagawa and Max Costant.

With one order of business out of the way, the Red Raider pair now turns its eyes toward earning a second straight NCHSAA team title. No. 2 South Point goes to top-ranked Hickory on Tuesday with a berth in the 3A state final at stake.

Following this past weekend’s effort, James Dover is 32-0 in his senior campaign, 14 of his wins in No. 2 singles competition. Rex Dover is faring nicely as well, winning 22 of 25 matches played during his sophomore season.
