Towery: Out Of 13 Generic House Ballot Polls In The RCP Average, “Only One Has Voters Choosing Republicans”
InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt Towery said Monday on FOX News that Republicans need motivating messages to drive voter turnout, arguing that Democratic “hatred” of President Donald Trump and the threat of investigations could help energize GOP voters.
JOEY JONES, FOX NEWS HOST: Here to discuss is Matt Towery, political analyst and pollster. Matt, do Democrats have a message that Americans want to hear? MATT TOWERY, INSIDERADVANTAGE POLLSTER: Not right now. They spend most of their time sort of pandering to the left wing of their party and they’re all over the board. I will say this though, Joey, you know this well. Republicans have got to take this very seriously because the last 13 generic ballot polls in the Real Clear Politics average, only one has people saying they want Republicans. Every other one says Democrat. That’s usually pretty natural at this point and these are, a lot of them are really bad pollsters. I mean, I had President Trump in my Inside Advantage poll at 50% approval. I think others have him at 50%, but a lot of these other pollsters have him at 36, 38, which is just ridiculous. But it does mean that the Republicans have to get ready for a battle and be prepared to be creative in turning out their vote. JONES: You know, when we look at who the candidates could be in 2028 for the Democrats, one that keeps coming up is good old Gavin Newsom. This is what Politico gave to Gavin Newsom. They gave him the Medal of Honor, the Watchdog Medal of Honor. In 2025, sometimes Newsom made Democrats mad, sometimes Newsom made Democrats exhilarated, but more than any other potential Democratic presidential candidate, Gavin Newsom made Democrats think about Gavin Newsom. What do you think about that? TOWERY: Well, he’s slick. Let’s just, that’s what he is. He’s slick. He looks the part. He’ll tell you anything. I mean, he could just tell you a lie so easily and it could sound like the truth. He could be a threat, but I want to go back to one point about these congressional races real quickly, Joey. Okay. The Republicans this next year need to put Donald Trump on the ballot. Now, he’s not going to be on the ballot, and as you know, people don’t turn out when he’s not on the ballot. But to go to Eric Swalwell’s comment, they’re gonna try to impeach this man again and they’re gonna start counter investigations if they get the House. That needs to be the number one motivating message from the Republicans, their hatred for Trump and the fact that MAGA Republicans will have to turn out and vote because if they don’t turn out, then the Democrats will take the House again. JONES: Well, you know, you’re a pollster. You get to ask people questions. What makes people turn out? Is it always being against something, being afraid of what might happen? I mean, it seems like if you come in office and you do what you told them you would do, you lose energy with voters. TOWERY: Well, you would think so, but you know, in my experience over the many years, there has to be something that riles people up to say, I’m gonna get off my couch and go vote or I’m gonna mail in that ballot or whatever you put, however you vote. And we’ve seen in these special elections so far, Joey, the Democrats have been winning, even in our home state of Georgia. You know, we lost two PSE races. So it’s got to be motivation and it’s got to be about getting people to protect Donald Trump and allow him to have two more years after these two to get the job done. I think if they do that, if the Republicans have that message right, then you could easily see a Republican Congress again.
