Wegmann: Trump Is Loving Democrats Being Forced To Choose Between Crime And Policing
RCP White House reporter Phil Wegmann said the Trump administration is “loving” trapping Democrats in a bind directly between more police and more crime, on this week’s “FOX News Sunday” panel:
SHANNON BREAM, FOX NEWS: What about this idea that the White House kind of likes the optics of this? The Democrats are at least appearing in some sense to look like, “We don’t want your help. We have this under control,” while people who live in their cities say, “No, we want the help.” PHIL WEGMANN, REALCLEARPOLITICS: The White House is loving this because, regardless of the motivations of these Democratic mayors and governors, the end result here is more policing. I think the White House sees this in a similar vein to the border. Remember Donald Trump’s argument about the border. It was, “You don’t need new policies. You need a new president.” It’s similar here in that the White House doesn’t think that there are new policies that are needed. Instead, in D.C., they’re throwing the book at some of these criminals-1990s broken-windows theory policing. That allows the White House to go to L.A., go to New York, go to Chicago and say, “This is a question of will. Why aren’t you making your cities more like Washington, D.C.?” Why did you let it get this bad?
