ABDUL EL-SAYED: My name is Abdul El-Sayed, and I am running for U.S. Senate because it just shouldn’t be this hard. Shouldn’t be this hard to afford a second bag of groceries. Shouldn’t be this hard to pay your rent or believe you can own a home. Shouldn’t be this hard to see a doctor in the richest, most powerful country in the world. And it shouldn’t be this hard to pay your taxes and know that that money is going to be spent on you and your kids instead of dropping bombs on somebody else and their kids. Shouldn’t be this hard. Now look, I’m a doctor. I rebuilt the health department in this city, led Wayne County’s Department of Health. We did things like put glasses on kids’ faces, take on big corporate polluters, eliminate medical debt, make sure our kids weren’t exposed to lead in their schools. And I’m running because I know that Donald Trump is not himself the disease. He’s just the worst symptom of the disease of our politics. The disease is the system that allows big corporations and billionaires and special interests to buy and sell politicians in ways that leave them rigging the system against us. It’s why we’ve got to pay more for all we’ve got to buy, get paid less for the work we do, and watch as our money gets misspent doing stupid things rather than doing smart things here at home. So we’ve got an opportunity to get money out of politics and put money in your pockets. That’s Medicare for All, and I know that all of us working together are going to do that. Now, one of the first things I want to do when I get to D.C. is make sure that we step up, fight for our fighting unions, and pass that PRO Act, because we need to normalize union organizing in every sector of American life. Unions built the middle class. Unions built the 40-hour workweek. Unions built the weekend. Unions can do it again if we stand with our unions and lead with our unions, and that is exactly what I want to do when I get to D.C. Again, my name is Abdul El-Sayed.
