Sacks focused on defining Coxon as a “plant” working with industry insiders to advocate a government takeover of the AI industry. “I think your first question to him last night was the correct one, which is you asked him who he was working with. He said nobody,” Sacks said to Baier. “The internet has had a day to review that. What they have seen is that this is an account of a relatively low-level staffer of Anthropic, never tweeted before, had no followers. All of a sudden, he posts this tweet and gets amplified by the biggest doomer NGOs. The odds that he is not working with them are very low.” “The clincher of this is that The Wall Street Journal ran a story about his resignation tweet, posted 18 minutes before the tweet itself got posted, so obviously he was working with The Wall Street Journal on this story,” Sacks said. “So he is trying to portray himself as just this organic, you know, viral phenomenon, but the truth is this was a well-orchestrated media op. And it was designed to scare the public about AI — so they implement their preferred approach to AI, which is a government takeover, to have a very heavy hand in government regulation of AI.” Baier notes that this whistleblower isn’t the only person to express concerns like this and asked for a response to the issue. “There are others besides Jacob who have come out and expressed concern about AI and keeping it in a box and regulations, even as we are having this competition with China, as they’re moving forward as well,” Baier asked. “How do you see that?” “One of the things that Jacob claimed, and others have claimed, is we can reach a deal with China, that if we pause, they will pause. There is simply no basis for believing that. Chinese officials have never said that,” Sacks said. “In fact, if you look at the statements of Chinese officials and their AI companies, they believe that AI is something that is very good for their economy, and they are interested in moving that forward.” “And they frankly don’t have these doomer groups in China pushing for a pause. So they are not interested in a pause. And if we were to stop or pause, then I don’t think they would,” he said. “And even if we could agree with them on that deal, I don’t think it would be enforceable. There would be no way of verifying it.” “One last point on this is that the Chinese public is actually, if you look at polling of the Chinese, they are quite optimistic about AI. Something like 80% of Chinese people think AI will be a positive for them,” he said. “So, frankly, they don’t have this giant influence operation of these doomer groups in China.” “What we have here in the U.S., though, is we have this huge media campaign against AI, and it is turning the public against AI. And if we do try to pause or stop our AI development, we will play into China’s hands.” “And frankly, that is why there is evidence that the CCP is supporting some of these doomer campaigns in the U.S. They would love for us to stop AI development over here,” said Sacks. Baier asks what he means by “doomer” campaign. “We looked at Jacob — he was at Anthropic for four months, OpenAI for a few years. There are others in the system, in Anthropic and OpenAI, who have expressed concerns, David,” he asked. “When you say ‘doomer group,’ is this a psyop? Are you saying an organized thing from the inside?” “What I would say is that there are different camps or schools of thought about AI in Silicon Valley. There are groups like the Effective Altruists and the rationalists. Sort of like these schools of ideology about it,” Sacks said. “You could sort of brand one end of the spectrum as these doomer groups, very negative view of AI.” “Then there are other groups, other people, who have a very positive view,” he said. “For instance, we heard Jensen Huang talking at the Goldman Sachs conference today. He said that Jacob’s comments were silly, they were foolish, they were irresponsible, they were untrue. He’s more optimistic about AI.” “I guess what I’m telling you is that Jacob is portrayed in the media as representing this broad swath of Silicon Valley,” Sacks continued. “To be sure, there are others who think like him. It is not a monolith. There is a very diverse set of opinions about the future of AI.”
RealClearPolitics Videos

David Sacks, chairman of the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology, joined FNC’s Bret Baier, Thursday on “Special Report,” to respond to Anthropic “whistleblower” Jacob Coxon’s doomsday warnings about AI, and how the industry is responding, which were also discussed Wednesday on the RCP Podcast.
