{"id":94611,"date":"2026-06-05T03:23:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T03:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fallsurfing.net\/firstnews\/for-chris-billam-smith-the-case-for-joining-zuffa-boxing-was-simple-jai-opetaia\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T03:23:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T03:23:09","slug":"for-chris-billam-smith-the-case-for-joining-zuffa-boxing-was-simple-jai-opetaia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fallsurfing.net\/firstnews\/for-chris-billam-smith-the-case-for-joining-zuffa-boxing-was-simple-jai-opetaia\/","title":{"rendered":"For Chris Billam-Smith, the case for joining Zuffa Boxing was simple: &#039;Jai Opetaia&#039;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BOURNEMOUTH, England \u2014 One narrative commonly told within the boxing business is that young fighters grow up dreaming of winning the green and gold belt of the WBC, the black and gold of the WBA, or the red and gold of the WBO and IBF.<\/p>\n<p>It is, perhaps, seen as one of the challenges Zuffa Boxing faces in its inaugural year as TKO\u2019s upstart fight firm seeks to establish a belt no active boxer grew up yearning to win.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Billam-Smith, the former WBO cruiserweight world champion who headlines Zuffa Boxing\u2019s first international show this Saturday, offered an alternative look.<\/p>\n<p>England\u2019s Billam-Smith (21-2, 13 KOs) dominated at a domestic level, built a fanbase in his home country, and now returns to Bournemouth for Zuffa Boxing 7 against the knockout puncher Ryan Rozicki, after headlining at English Premier League soccer stadiums and taking on Gilberto \u201cZurdo\u201d Ramirez in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>For Billam-Smith, it\u2019s no longer just about the sport\u2019s four major world championship titles. He simply wants to prove he\u2019s the best in the world at cruiserweight, and the only way to do that is by fighting the man many believe to be best in the division: Jai Opetaia, the unbeaten New Zealander whose presence in Zuffa alone drew Billam-Smith to sign with the same stable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy focus is on proving I\u2019m the No. 1 in the world, and when I signed with Zuffa, that was Jai Opetaia,\u201d he told Uncrowned. \u201cSo that&#39;s why we\u2019re going this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d29szjachogqwa.cloudfront.net\/images\/2026-06\/e4f23cfe-f2a5-4f07-8201-a4dca506dd4a\" data-crop-orig-src=\"https:\/\/d29szjachogqwa.cloudfront.net\/images\/2026-06\/e4f23cfe-f2a5-4f07-8201-a4dca506dd4a\" style=\"height:3514px;width:5439px;\" alt=\"LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 26: Chris Billam-Smith punches Brandon Glanton during the Cruiserweight fight between Chris Billam-Smith and Brandon Glanton as part of the Fatal Fury - Fight Night at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 26, 2025 in London, England. Tickets remain available for the show, and it\u2019s something Billam-Smith is confident in doing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at our last opponents, there&#39;s a massive gulf in class there,\u201d he said of Rozicki (21-1-1, 20 KOs), \u201cand I think that I&#39;m just a better all-around boxer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can do a lot of different things. I can box. I can fight. I&#39;m very smart with what I do. I can punch, obviously, as well. And I&#39;ve boxed at a higher level [than him], so that will help me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Billam-Smith and Rozicki have had the same number of professional fights (23), but a turning point for the Brit came in 2019, before he finished Craig Glover for the Commonwealth title, when he ventured to Riga, Latvia to take his game to the next level by training alongside \u2014 and sparring \u2014 former three-time cruiserweight world champion Mairis Briedis.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, Briedis was a wrecking ball, pushing Oleksandr Usyk all the way to a close decision, out-pointing Noel Mikaelian, and then finishing Krzysztof Glowacki.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, before Briedis beat Yuniel Dorticos in 2020 to anoint himself as cruiserweight\u2019s new No. 1 following Usyk\u2019s departure from the division, Billam-Smith, not yet a contender, shared the ring with him, again and again, in Latvia.<\/p>\n<p><core-module type=\"curatedLinks\" title=\"More from Uncrowned\" headerlink=\"\" subheadline=\"\" listid=\"62a7abeb-1769-4e33-b93c-265cf7f4e38c\"><\/core-module><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;d only had 11 fights, but it was a great experience for me sparring [him],\u201d Billam-Smith said, \u201cand something that really benefitted me, because I was like, \u2018This is the level I want to get to, and I&#39;m not far off it\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Billam-Smith has always acknowledged that the experience gap was valid and Briedis got \u201cthe better\u201d of him in \u201cgood, competitive sessions,\u201d which only helped him going forward as the Englishman went on to beat Isaac Chamberlain, Lawrence Okolie and Richard Riakporhe in subsequent years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With nearly seven years passed, he\u2019s only lost once since that Riga trip \u2014 a setback on the scorecards after 12 rounds with Ramirez in a two-belt unification bout.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez has since <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/boxing\/breaking-news\/live\/david-benavidez-obliterates-zurdo-ramirez-with-monstrous-star-making-ko-calls-out-canelo-alvarez-063000026.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\">lost to David Benavidez in a dominant performance<\/a> that Billam-Smith acknowledged as \u201csuperb,\u201d noting that Benavidez carried his power \u2014 and kept his speed \u2014 in the move up from light heavyweight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people thought [Benavidez] would win, but I was sure \u2018Zurdo,\u2019 especially the size of seeing him, would have imposed himself. But he couldn\u2019t,\u201d Billam-Smith said. \u201cBenavidez\u2019s power translated all the way up to cruiserweight, which is rare because of the 25-pound gulf in weight from light heavy to cruiserweight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew it could happen, but I just didn&#39;t think that the weight and the speed would transfer as well as it did. But because it did, the result makes sense.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to have another big name in the division,\u201d Billam-Smith added. \u201cThat\u2019s what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boxing politics could scupper fights like that, though.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear if Benavidez will remain at cruiserweight to defend his unified titles, or drop back down to the 175-pound division. (Photo by Tayfun Coskun\/Anadolu via Getty Images)\" data-uuid=\"9dcb74c6-8a15-3744-98bb-a8e3dbcb4948\"\/><figcaption>David Benavidez announced his presence in the cruiserweight division with a demolition of Gilberto &quot;Zurdo&quot; Ramirez in May.<\/figcaption><div class=\"photo-credit\">Anadolu via Getty Images<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The WBC boss, Mauricio Sulaiman, recently even ordered a fight between Mikaelian and Benavidez, seemingly freezing Opetaia out from the sanctioning body picture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The current option for Mikaelian is to fight Benavidez or vacate the WBC belt and pursue Opetaia, possibly for the Zuffa belt.<\/p>\n<p>The broader context for the friction is that Zuffa has positioned itself as the alternative to the traditional method of competing through boxing\u2019s four major sanctioning bodies. A cold war between the new firm and the old guard appears to be taking shape, and fighters are caught in the crosshairs as it seemingly leaves Opetaia and Billam-Smith with fewer options.<\/p>\n<p>But, the way Billam-Smith tells it, his option is superior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t really understand [the friction], because surely you want the best in the world to hold your sanctioning belt,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, whether he&#39;s got one of the sanctioning body belts, or just a Zuffa belt, it doesn&#39;t matter because people see [Opetaia] as the No. 1 in the division, and it\u2019s a fight that, for both of our legacies, has to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Challenging Opetaia is his biggest \u201cfocus,\u201d Billam-Smith finished.<\/p>\n<p>But it can\u2019t come to fruition unless he goes out and handles business against Rozicki on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I can stop him, and I believe that&#39;s what the outcome will be,\u201d he said. \u201cIt could happen at any point in the fight.
