Tom Bevan argues that Democrats are using the cases to undermine legitimate immigration enforcement, while Carl Cannon attempts to empathize with the fear created by the administration’s deportation tactics. David Ignatius in the Washington Post: Trump Pushed the Reset Button. This is ‘Iran Fiasco 2.0.’ “They’re reading stories and hearing stories in their communities about people being sent to prison in El Salvador,” Cannon said. “Because of some of the publicity and the way these deportations have been carried out, their whole life flashes before their eyes… So they flee.” “If you came here and Joe Biden essentially invited you, and the Democratic Party invited you, and Mayorkas was willing to lie for you to be here, and you got some piece of paper that said you have to show up in court on August 33, 2037, why would you think you were here illegally?” he said. “This is another perfect example of how the left’s empathy only goes in one direction,” Bevan said. “It only goes toward the people who are here illegally… and not to the innocent Americans who died at the hands of some of these folks.” *** 12:24 – Socialism on the March in Michigan The panel turns to the Michigan Democratic Senate primary between Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed, which can serve as a test of the party establishment against the new democratic-socialist wing,” Walworth explained. “What you need are intellectuals and members of the bourgeoisie, basically, to lead the revolution on their behalf. This goes back to Lenin. It’s just part of the communist playbook.” Haley Stevens: “That’s the Michigan way!” *** 19:27 – Has Iran Won? Retired A.F. Brigadier General John Teichert responds to President Trump’s threat to attack Iranian power plants and bridges unless Tehran returns to negotiations, and an article making the case that Iran has won the war. Teichert argues that military targets should be selected according to how they advance strategic objectives, rather than as indiscriminate punishment, and rejects the conclusion that the war is necessarily lost. “Deterrence or compellence only happens in the mind of an adversary when they actually believe you,” he said. Is Iran just stringing the U.S. along with round after round of negotiation? “You need to do some things that have been talked about but not yet implemented. One of those is what the vice president said: a conditions-based approach. That means Iran gets nothing out of the deal until they start demonstrating compliance or good faith,” Teichert said. War on the Rocks: Outgunned, But Not Outplayed: Iran’s Theory of Victory “That’s why I disliked every one of the Pentagon press conferences during the war. I don’t care how many targets we struck. I care about how what we are doing is linking to the strategic big picture,” Teichert said. “I don’t think this war is lost. I think we need to return to strategic thought and link military activities to actual strategic objectives.” *** 36:41 – Jack Smith Caught Lying Before Congress? The panel looks at reports that Justice Department records contradict former special counsel Jack Smith’s congressional testimony about investigators obtaining the contents of lawmakers’ text messages. Bevan says Smith appears to have lied and should be prosecuted, while Cannon argues that Smith should be given an opportunity to explain precisely what he meant. “I’m not going to pronounce somebody guilty of perjury, but it doesn’t look good,” Cannon said. “We’ve come full circle. Now it’s the special counsels who are spying on their perceived enemies.” *** 41:33 – House Votes to End Daylight Savings The episode ends with debate in Congress over “locking the clock.” Is daylight saving time an outdated inconvenience? “Just pick one, I don’t care!” Bevan said. “If children get run over at the school bus stop in the dark during the winter, you have no problem with that, so long as we can barbecue in the summer?” Walworth quipped. “I actually like changing the clocks.
