MS NOW political analyst Charles Blow comments on black voters being taken for granted in the Democratic Party while they chase voters in the Midwest. <\/p>\n
KATY TUR, MS NOW ANCHOR: Peter makes an interesting point. I mean, the Democrats are trying to win back the Midwest and some of the states that used to compete more heavily. And Iowa is one of them. Is that a risk they’re running by diminishing it? CHARLES BLOW: Well, you can make an argument on both sides of that coin, but Black voters have to be recognized for their love and loyalty to the Democratic Party. They’re voting nine out of 10 Black people voting for Democrats. When they make the argument that we need to chase the people who are running away from us rather than embrace the people who are trying to hug us, it sends a message to Black voters that you are a captured constituency. We don’t have to worry about you loving us. We just have to worry about you turning out. Being taken for granted in any relationship doesn’t feel good. And I think that when we make that argument that it’s either or, that we either have to chase the Midwesterners who are fickle and vote Obama in one election and vote Trump in another, or we prioritize the people who have always been loyal for the last 30 years, have voted overwhelmingly for your party more than any other demographic, that is a problematic tension that you’re creating. And I think you have to embrace the people who love you best.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
