Rep. Haley Stevens joined MS NOW’s Al Sharpton to discuss her opponent in the Michigan Senate primary, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: <\/p>\n
AL SHARPTON: Now I want to ask you about your opponent, Abdul El-Sayed. You both have lobbed some tough criticisms at each other, especially on the topic of Israel. This week, you put out a tweet in which you said your opponent wants to blame all his problems on Jewish Americans. You also said that if he lost, he would become a whining celebrity, part of what you called the complainer class. That post got some strong reactions, both positive and negative. Do you still stand by all of what you said? REP. HALEY STEVENS: Well, look, I absolutely stand by what I’m hearing from Michiganders: They need a senator who’s going to lower their costs, stand up for their jobs and push back on these abuses of power. You’re right that my opponent has campaigned on a lot of anger. He has campaigned with some interesting out-of-state people-this blogger who has been very provocative and controversial. I’m proud to be standing with Congressman Clyburn when he comes in, or the former commissioner of Social Security, Martin O’Malley. Michiganders are scared right now. They’re scared about their earned benefits. They remember Elon Musk prancing around with a chainsaw. I have done something different than Abdul: I have won. I haven’t hidden my tax returns. I haven’t placed all blame on a single country. I am doing what the people of Michigan are telling me they need from their next U.S. senator. I was just on the Avenue of Fashion in Detroit. There’s a lot of joy. There’s a lot of optimism. But there’s a need for leadership, and that is what I’m showing in this moment. AL SHARPTON: Finally, I have to talk about the polling. According to a new Emerson College survey, El-Sayed leads by 15 points ahead of next week’s primary vote. Fifty-four percent of likely Democratic voters support El-Sayed, 39% back you and 6% remain undecided. We don’t know how this will turn out, but if you lose, I have to ask you: Can you commit to fully supporting Mr. El-Sayed in the general election if he wins this primary, even after everything that has been said in this campaign? REP. HALEY STEVENS: You bet. Abdul recently said that I was the least qualified candidate in the country, or something like that. Look, I am on the team, all right? I’m going to link arms and do whatever is needed. I want to get down there and help out on these down-ballot races in Michigan. We can flip the House, and I’m going to stand by our Democratic nominee, whether it’s me or my opponent..<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
