KATY TUR, MS NOW: And I do think, Susan, I think it is, I don’t like navel-gazing stories, I don’t like talking too much about us in the press, I don’t like doing it. But I do think that there’s a difference here, because when you were in the presidential press corps, yes, you are signing up to travel with the president, and all of the dangers inherent in that, and yeah, you’re going overseas and you’re going to a country that borders Iran, it is dangerous inherently. But in this case, there was a specific threat, a specific threat, one that prompted the president moving to another plane, and being left as the unwitting decoy, it’s not just the press, other staff members as well, maybe not the cabinet secretaries, but who knows who in the presidential staff was aware of this, but as unwitting decoys flying out of that country, I mean, that, am I right to say that is a step beyond? SUSAN GLASSER, THE NEW YORKER: Well, look, I mean, you know, what it tells you is the level of distrust that exists between this particular White House and the White House press corps. I’m really struck, as people have been groping for historical analogies, and David rightly points out that, you know, this basically is an exception, and no one can think of a direct match, you know, there was a time when there was a threat to President Clinton on a trip to Pakistan, and his press secretary came out this week and pointed out that, look, after the decision was made to take the president on a different plane, then after the fact, it was briefed to the reporters. That never was the case here. And if it weren’t for this Washington Post reporting based on sources, we would not know about this right now. I think that speaks to the approach of this White House, first of all. Second of all, I do think there’s this resonance with the idea that right now there’s always a balance between the security of the president, which is paramount for an agency like the Secret Service, and the competing dictates to be accountable to the American public via the media, to be accountable to Congress. None of that seems to have taken place in this instance. And you do have a president who has sort of sent the word out to his staff, essentially, that he’s not interested in that kind of accountability. And the whole story of the plane itself is not only-is a story of a president making unilateral and very unaccountable decisions that affect his security, not to mention cost huge amounts of money to the American people. And believe me, all those planes flying back and forth to the U.K., when I was looking at your footage right now, Katie, to me, I’m thinking, you know, you can paper over a lot of Donald Trump’s mistakes by spending millions and millions of the taxpayers’ dollars to fix those mistakes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
