John Hinckley Jr. on Multiple Trump Assassination Attempts: “I Just Can’t Believe This Is Going On”
Megyn Kelly is joined by John Hinckley Jr., author of “John Hinckley Jr.: Who I Really Am,” to talk about what he thought when he saw another Trump assassination attempt at the “Hinckley Hilton,” the rise of political violence in America today, people reaching out to him on X to commit further violence against Trump, and more.
MEGYN KELLY: You caught our eye because you were speaking out about the most recent assassination attempt on the current sitting president, and as you and I were sitting down together, the news is just breaking that they have now rescheduled that White House correspondents’ dinner, the President had said we have to do it, we can’t give up on it, we can’t say it’s just off because of this terrible event. And now we get news that there’s going to be held this time at the Waldorf Astoria, so they changed the venue, but they are going forward with it in the summer months in July. What do you make of that? JOHN HINCKLEY JR.: I guess I’m glad it’s not at the Hilton, because I don’t think it’s a very safe place to hold events like that. The Waldorf Astoria doesn’t sound too much safer to me, but hopefully things will go well. MEGYN KELLY: Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know what you speak. Is it from your personal experience that you draw that conclusion? JOHN HINCKLEY JR.: The Wall Street Washington is a massive hotel, and you know it’s just not safe to have so many people milling around and unmonitored. So, the Waldorf story, I’m sure they’ll have tired security, but it’s interesting that they’re rescheduled so fast. MEGYN KELLY: What was your reaction, John, when you saw that another would-be gunman stormed the same hotel where you committed your act all those years ago? JOHN HINCKLEY JR.: his is like the third or fourth attempt against President Trump, and it’s just like I just can’t believe this is going on, because there’s so much violence in America right now, and it’s hard to watch the news, because every time you turn on the news, there’s all this carnage going on. So I just, you know, after the first assassination attempt on Trump, I think I posted on X that violence is not the way to go, and that’s still what I believe. MEGYN KELLY: I mean, is that something like, describe your journey to that point, you know, from that point in 1981 outside of the Hilton, to that tweet? JOHN HINCKLEY JR: Well, I’m just a totally different person from the first person I was in 1981 that was different, and that’s why I wrote the book, actually, was to show the public the way that I really am now, there’s been such a negative image of me for like 45 years, and people think that I’m way the way that I was back then. So, I hope they, if they read the book, there’s also a documentary out that I participated in. They’ll see I’m not the person that I was back then at all. I’m a totally changed man.
