Kamala Harris: Democrats Need “Expanded Playbook” To Defend Voting Rights — “We Need To Be Ruthless Too”
Former Vice President Kamala Harris suggested that the Democratic Party get an “expanded playbook” of ideas during a “no bad idea brainstorm” on the “Win with Black Women” podcast. She suggested Democrats take these ideas seriously: Reform the Electoral College, expand the number of Justices on the Supreme Court, make D.C. and Puerto Rico states, and parliamentary-style “multi-member districts.” “I think that we need an expanded playbook in a way that we invite all ideas, that we say… look, this is a moment where there are no bad ideas, a no bad idea brainstorm is what I’d like to call it,” Harris said. “And in that no bad ideas brainstorm, we talk about what we need to do and think about doing around the Electoral College. We talk about the idea of Supreme Court reform, which includes expanding the Supreme Court. We invite a conversation about multi-member districts.” “The United States Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act,” she said. “They’re unapologetic about what they have been up to for decades, because this is on the backs of everything from literacy tests to poll taxes, all of that. And what they are doing is it is about a continuation of an agenda that has been decades in the making, to basically take the power from the people. That is what they are trying to do, and the way that the decision is written.” “Here’s how I think about it. What they are doing is they are backdooring racism behind politics to get to this decision and to justify what is happening, in particular right now in all the southern states. And this is obviously a time for us to fight.” “These folks are playing to win. We got to play to win, too. And they’re ruthless. And look, we are never going to violate the law or do anything unethical or immoral, but we need to be ruthless, too. And that means knowing the tools that are at our disposal or are within our reach.” “We agree that it is right to have ethics rules for Supreme Court justices. And let’s put those in place. Let’s talk about statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C. These are the things I think that we’ve got to do,” Harris continued. “We’ve got to neutralize these red states from cheating, including blue states expanding their maps. And all of this, I think, is, look, we got to fight fire with fire.”
