Mamdani on 2028: “We’re Not Running Away From The Democratic Party, We’re Going Back To What The Party Used To Be”
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani shares with SiriusXM host Clay Cane his perspective on the potential contenders for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination and the direction of the party. The conversation premieres today at 12:00 p.m. ET on SiriusXM Urban View (Channel 126).
CLAY CANE: Is there anybody out there, if you think about the year 2028, that’s resonating with you as, “Oh, they could be a pretty good contender for the Democratic nomination for president”? Is there anybody out there that, as you and your wife are sitting back talking about life and politics, anybody out there where you say, Oh… ” MAYOR ZOHRAN MAMDANI: You’re just sitting on the edge of Roosevelt Island right now? You just cast out your reel, right? Let me just fish! CANE: That’s resonating with you. Because it can’t be you. So, like, is there anybody that you’re… MAMDANI: Let me say, first of all, not me. No. CANE: Of course not. Yeah. MAMDANI: I think we have a number of choices. I know that people are making their own choices of whether or not they want to run. What I’m hopeful of is we’re seeing a lot of examples of what it can look like to have that focus on the working person-people who understand that affordability isn’t just something you say; it’s something you have to deliver. And in doing this, we’re not running away from the Democratic Party. We’re going back to what the party used to be. You think about FDR and LaGuardia. You think about the New Deal. That’s what the Democratic Party once was. That’s what it could be again. And if we want to win, I think that’s what we have to become. CANE: But there isn’t one person that you’re feeling? MAMDANI: You know, I’m looking for somebody in their late 40s who’s struggling with a calf muscle, showing vulnerability… But also humility. CANE: If it were me, they would kick my ass out, mayor. They’d say, “Get out.” They’d call-they would say all that.
