RCP Podcast: DSA Upset in Florida, Alaska in Jeopardy for Senate GOP? Did Darline Graham Blow It in S.C.?
Wednesday on the RealClearPolitics podcast, Carl Cannon, Tom Bevan, and Andrew Walworth break down the results of the most interesting contests in yesterday’s Florida and Alaska primaries, and Sen. Darline Graham’s mind-blowing position on foreign policy at a South Carolina Senate primary debate last night. California Democrat Rep. Jared Huffman joins the show to talk about his new book: “No Prophets: The Fight to Save Democracy from Christian Nationalism” Plus, the panel discusses Disney’s legal fight with the FCC, and former Fauci aide David Morens pleading guilty over federal records related to COVID-19. Listen live weekdays at 11:00 a.m. Eastern on SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly Channel 111, or on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, or other platforms.
00:00 – Opening: Florida Primary Results Walworth, Cannon, and Bevan discuss yesterday’s Florida primary elections, with interesting races for governor, Senate, and House on both sides of the aisle. RCP Average: 2026 Florida Senate Special Election – Moody vs. Vindman | Moody +8.4 DSA-adjacent candidate Angie Nixon beat former NSA staffer Eugene Vindman in the Democratic race for Senate. Is this a win for the DSA or establishment? Does she have a chance against GOP Sen. Ashley Moody in the fall? *** 08:35 – Alaska In Jeopardy for GOP? The panel turns to Alaska, where Mary Peltola finished ahead of incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan in the all-party primary. They argue that the actual primary results are a stronger warning sign than polling and discuss how a second candidate also named Dan Sullivan could complicate a close November race. RCP Average: 2026 Alaska Senate – Sullivan vs. Peltola | Peltola +6 “She beat both Dan Sullivans combined!” Tom Bevan said about Peltola. “The problem is both Dan Sullivans moved on … If this race tightens in November, the fake Dan Sullivan — that dirty trick — siphoning a point or two, could work.” *** 11:22 – Sen. Darline Graham Nordone The panel marvels at South Carolina Republican Senator Darline Graham Nordone’s brutally honest debate answer that she is “not that informed on national security.” Is this self-awareness or a step too far? Watch: Sen. Darlene Graham at S.C. GOP Primary Debate: “I’m Not That Informed on National Security” “Did she never listen to a word her brother said the whole time he was in public office?” Carl Cannon quipped. “I mean, it’s part of the job. To say you’re not that informed and you’re not that interested in it is to say you’re not really interested in doing the job. It raises the question of why she even wants to be in the Senate and why she’s even running … It struck me as disqualifying on its face.” “Maybe she gets points for honesty,” Bevan added. “Too often politicians try to pretend they know when they don’t, so maybe that’s a good thing … But she has two weeks to define herself as anything other than Lindsey Graham’s sister, and this will probably define her.” *** 18:10 – “Christian Nationalism” Stronger Than Ever? California Democrat Rep. Jared Huffman joins the show to discuss his book arguing that Christian nationalism poses a serious threat to American democracy. Huffman’s book: “No Prophets: The Fight to Save Democracy from Christian Nationalism” He distinguishes ordinary conservative Christianity from a more militant, theocratic fringe, his own transition from a devout Latter-day Saint background to secular humanism, and rejects comparisons between Christian nationalism and the Democratic Socialists as equivalent political forces. “The hardcore Christian nationalists are trying to topple democracy,” Huffman said. “They want a full-blown theocracy.” “There’s a raging debate within Christianity over exactly what you just asked about. I liken it in the book to a contest between sort of Team Vengeance, the folks who have over the last few decades reinvented Jesus into this Rambo figure and believe in a militant, in-your-face, conquest-oriented Christian supremacy. I think that’s pretty dangerous stuff,” he said. “And then there are the folks that are trying to reclaim their faith. I call them Team Compassion. These are the folks that actually read the Sermon on the Mount, the longest continuous discourse of Jesus Christ in the Bible.” *** 37:20 – FCC Board Member Wants to be Sued The panel debates Disney’s legal fight with the FCC and Commissioner Anna Gomez’s criticism of what she calls government censorship. Cannon argues that Trump and Vance correctly campaigned against censorship but says the administration is now using government power against disfavored media voices in much the same way. “I’m with Disney on this,” he said. “As soon as they get in office … starting to use the heavy hand of government to do exactly what was done to them.” *** 42:23 – Fauci’s Aide Pleads Guilty The episode ends with former Fauci aide David Morens pleading guilty over federal records related to COVID-19. The panel argues that the case provides some accountability, as Fauci himself is unlikely to face consequences. “Fauci is the guy that you want to get real accountability from,” Bevan said. “To hide those emails, to throw those emails away, to protect your boss, to protect yourself from accountability, it’s a pretty serious crime,” Cannon added.
