Tom Bevan: Cornyn Was Still Running “Bush Republican Playbook,” And Voters Showed Him The Door
RCP co-founder Tom Bevan spoke with Megyn Kelly about the results of this week’s Senate primary in Texas, where Ken Paxton won the GOP nomination, and his campaign against Democrat James Talarico, on her podcast — broadcast at noon on SiriusXM (right after RealClearPolitics). In response to Jesse Kelly’s comments about why Texan voters rejected John Cornyn, Bevan said: “He definitely was seen as part of the establishment, and that’s not where the base of the party is.” “This is the lesson for all of these politicians, and we see this on the left and the right, which is when you stop responding to the wants and desires of your constituents, you’re going to get replaced,” he said. “He was not responding to the MAGA base in Texas. He was still running sort of the George W. Bush Republican Party playbook in Washington, D.C. And so he was promptly shown the door.” “Paxton was ahead in the polls, but I don’t think anybody saw it being a 30-point blowout, which is what it ended up being.” “So I think that was a pretty emphatic answer by the base of the party in Texas that they had had enough of this guy, and they wanted somebody new, who they feel like is going to fight for what they want,” Bevan said.
