CNN’s Enten: 58% Of Voters Say Trump Has Made Them Worse Off Economically

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten reviews the results of a new CBS/YouGov poll on Americans’ attitudes toward the economy: If the president does tout the economy, how do voters feel about his performance on that subject? HARRY ENTEN: Promises made, promises broken, in the minds of the American public. Take a look here. The reason he won back in 2024 was because a plurality of voters thought that Trump would make them financially better off. Back in October 2024, 44% said he would make them better off; 38% said he would make them worse off. Look at these numbers now. Oh, my goodness. 58%-nearly three in five voters-say that Trump is making them financially worse off. That’s up like a rocket. The better off number is down through the floor and into Lake Michigan. Look at that: From 44% to just 13% now saying they’re better off. The rest say about the same. These are absolutely devastating numbers. The issue that got Trump reelected-now the voters have absolutely turned against him. Think about what this poll is actually saying there. JOHN BERMAN: What do voters say about whether the economy is getting better or worse? HARRY ENTEN: I think this is part of the picture. Look at the share saying the U.S. economy is getting worse. Back when Trump was reelected in November 2024, 42% of Americans-less than 50%-said the economy was getting worse. Now, again, a very similar number: 59% say the U.S. economy is getting worse. The getting better number is down close to 20%. I don’t know how this works for Republicans come the midterm elections, when the economy is the number one issue, along with inflation, and three in five say it’s getting worse, while only about one in five say it’s getting better. That’s an equation that does not work out to success. JOHN BERMAN: I’ll tell you, if he’s going to go to Michigan and say the economy is doing great, about 60% say it’s not. That is a message that sometimes does not land well at all with voters. How does he rank historically? HARRY ENTEN: Just look at this. According to the CBS poll, who has the worst economic net approval at this point in a second term? Donald John Trump: 30 points underwater, even worse than George W. Bush heading into those midterms back in 2006. We’ve spoken about it before. That comparison, simply put, does not work for Republicans. JOHN BERMAN: Of course, the president is calling for a cut in interest rates. He has a new chair of the Federal Reserve. What are the prediction markets saying about whether that will happen? HARRY ENTEN: Most likely, it won’t. The chance that the Fed cuts interest rates in July-we have a meeting later this week-is less than 1%. How about this year? A 19% chance, according to Kalshi prediction markets. The bottom line is that the American people think the economy is getting worse. What Trump wants to do, according to the prediction markets-those putting their money where their mouths are-they don’t think it’s going to happen.
